A council has been accused of hypocrisy over its decision to join a group opposing the expansion of Heathrow airport.
News Shopper previously reported how Lewisham Council was joining the 2M group, an alliance of local authorities concerned about increased flights and a new runway at Heathrow.
But it has emerged the council failed to respond to the Department of Transport's consultation on the issue earlier this year.
And at a council meeting on March 3, deputy mayor of Lewisham Councillor Heidi Alexander said the council did not have the resources or expertise to add to the debate on airport expansion.
Liberal Democrat leader Councillor Mark Morris said: "In my opinion, the actions of Steve Bullock are totally hypocritical in attempting to claim credit for joining 2M when he has previously failed to do so and ensured Lewisham Council has not responded to a vital consultation over the expansion of Heathrow."
But Cllr Alexander said: "While I might have personal views about expansion I wouldn't want to ask a council officer to stop what they're doing for something which is not the day-to-day business of a local authority.

"Actually the debate has evolved over the past few months it's become clear the group has a wider interest for the council."
