ST ALBANS: Support for mums with baby blues

Two mothers who suffered with severe postnatal depression are now supporting others through the dark days of parenthood.

Yvonne Adams and Charlotte Wilmer-Barbrook will begin a 12-week counselling programme designed to help new mothers battling a postnatal illness deal with their symptoms and learn to cope with the demands of motherhood.

The pair will be using their experience of the isolating illness and their professional qualifications to provide counselling and group therapy to mums, dads and their families.

Charlotte of St Anne's Road in London Colney, who uses creative methods to help women overcome their trauma, said: "Having suffered from postnatal illness following the births of our first children, we found ourselves in a totally bewildering and overwhelming situation.

"One of the worst parts of this experience was the not knowing what was happening to us, when we would get better or who we could turn to for help."

Trained councillor Yvonne of Gillian Avenue, St Albans added: "I am committed to removing the stigma and lack of understanding surrounding postnatal illness.

"I feel strongly that it is often ignored and treated dismissively.

"Mums are often left trying to cope not only with a new baby, but also the demands that motherhood brings."

be able to offer one to one counselling for other sufferers."

The course will begin Thursday, May 1, in Bricket Wood but the venue is yet to be confirmed.

Six places will be allocated on a first come first serve basis.
