ELMBRIDGE: Probe over baby's death

The performance of a doctor arrested after the death of a baby girl at St Peter's Hospital will be examined by the General Medical Council today.

Vladan Visnjevac, who is believed to be in hiding in Bosnia, was arrested after the death of Hollie Dinning from head injuries hours after being born at St Peter's in July 2002.

Dr Visnjevac, who was a junior locum doctor at the time, was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter two months after he delivered the baby using forceps, according to The Times.

He returned to Bosnia by December that year because of family illness from where Surrey Police say they have been trying to extradite him but have faced resistance from Bosnian authorities.

The General Medical Council suspended the doctor after his arrest.

A "fitness to practise" hearing is expected to open today to investigate claims that he acted irresponsibly and inappropriately during the baby's delivery.

The hearing, in Dr Visnjevac's absence, can ban him from working in Britain.
