LEWISHAM: Health proposals could hit GPs
Proposals to axe hospital services could lead to a crisis in the training of GPs, according to a training organiser.
The claim was made in written evidence to Lewisham Council's healthier communities select committee by Dr Girish Malde, an organiser of the Lewisham GP Training Programme.
Under the A Picture of Health proposals for services in south-east London, Lewisham Hospital faces losing facilities such as A&E, maternity, acute general medicine and children's departments. Dr Malde said these were vital for the full training of GPs.
He said: "It is one of the biggest and most popular GP training schemes in London and options one and three would mean the loss of many posts."
Public consultations on the proposals ended last Friday.
A Picture of Health spokesman said: "I would hope if Dr Malde is worried, he would submit his concerns."
