SAY no to nuclear weapons. That is the message to Gordon Brown from members of his own party in Leyton.

Last week the likely successor to Tony Blair said he was committed to retaining Britain's nuclear arsenal.

In the long term, this would mean spending billions on a replacement for the country's existing Trident missile system.

In response, Leyton's Labour party passed a resolution urging the government not to do so.

It says the move would make the world a more dangerous place, and argues that the money could be better spent on public services such as health and education.

There should be a full debate in public and in Parliament so that arguments against nuclear weapons could be heard, says Leyton Labour party.

Leyton MP Harry Cohen agreed: "A new Trident would be obsolete before it began, and be irrelevant to the actual threats we face.

"We also need to encourage non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, not let other countries have the excuse well you are getting new nukes so why shouldn't we?'"
