A man has been jailed for eight years for raping an 18-year-old woman on Enfield Playing Fields.

Dwayne Westgarth, 32, of Great Cambridge Road, attacked his victim as she walked home from the direction of Donkey Lane at around 11.30pm on April 14, 2005.

He grabbed her from behind as she talked on her mobile phone, jumped on her back and demanded she hand over her mobile and bag.

His victim put up a struggle, but she was then pushed to the ground and raped.

Westgarth was interrupted by a couple walking through the park who heard the teenager screaming.

They raised the alarm and he fled, taking the victim's property with him.

Westgarth, a warehouse worker, was caught by police after his DNA was traced to blood found on the victim's jacket.

Westgarth, who denied the charge, was found guilty and sentenced to eight years for rape and three years for robbery at Inner London Crown Court on Thursday.

Det Insp Joe Daly, of Enfield's Operation Sapphire which led the investigation, said: "This was an horrific attack on a young woman. She has shown tremendous courage and determination in bringing Dwayne Westgarth to justice.

"I sincerely hope the guilty verdict will go some way to helping her, and her family, recover from their ordeal.

"I would also like to reassure the public the Metropolitan Police Service treats all sexual assault allegations very seriously.

"Specially trained officers deal with all victims and it is our aim to identify and prosecute perpetrators to the satisfaction of the victim and community."
