A 92-YEAR-OLD woman suffered serious injuries when a man kicked his way into her home and battered her savagely.

The pensioner was taken to hospital with severe bruising and cuts to her head, face, arms and legs following the assault in her Warren Road home, Leyton. She is in a stable condition but severely shocked.

Police are not revealing her identity at this stage or which hospital she is recovering in.

Det Sgt Dean Coyle, who is leading the investigation, called it a motiveless attack and said she was beaten with a wooden weapon and hit on the head with a radio while she was in her bed.

He said: "This is the most horrific attack on an elderly and vulnerable person I have dealt with in my time on the burglary and robbery squad.

"It is all hands to the pump now and all leads are being followed up to catch this man."

He said the man forced his way into the house by kicking open the front door just before 7am on Sunday. The woman was sleeping in a downstairs back room.

Det Sgt Coyle said he burst in on her but didn't say anything and immediately ran upstairs. He came back down with the wooden object and attacked her, hitting her around the head and body. He also threw a radio at her head which hit her.

He said: "It was a brutal and frenzied attack."

Det Sgt Coyle added that the man then tried to get out of the house through the front door but could not because it was on a special buzz system and could not be opened from the inside.

He then smashed a downstairs window to get out of the house and fled.

The woman was able to call an ambulance, which was there within minutes along with police.

Det Sgt Coyle said: "Neighbours must have heard the noise of the smashing window, especially at that time in the morning.

"We would appeal for any witnesses or anyone with information about the attack to come forward and contact me on 8345 3153 or anonymously call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111."
