A Palmers Green web designer has been bailed after being accused of inciting racial hatred during the protests against the publication of a cartoon satirising the Prophet Muhammad.

Mizanur Rahman, 22, of North Circular Road, has been charged with soliciting murder and the use of words likely to stir up racial hatred.

He appeared at Bow Street Magistrates Court in east London last Monday charged with offences under the Public Order Act and is due to appear at the Old Bailey on Friday.

He is alleged to have taken part in the central London demonstrations on February 3 in response to a Danish newspaper article that printed controversial cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad.

Protests were held by Muslims across the world. Islamic tradition forbids any depiction of the Prophet or Allah.

A large crowd gathered outside the Danish Embassy in Westminster and complaints were made to police after banners were waived that allegedly stirred up racial hatred.

Police have made other arrests in connection with the London protests.

Omar Zaheer, 26, of Derwent Road, Southall, has been charged with racially aggravated disorderly behaviour contrary to the Public Order Act.

Umran Javed, 26, of Washwood Heath Road, Birmingham, has been charged with soliciting murder and using words likely to stir up racial hatred.

Two other men, a 39-year-old and 23-year-old, have been bailed to return to a central London police station while investigations continue.
