PEOPLE throughout the borough united in a day of prayer recently for those with autism and asperger's syndrome, their families and carers.

During childhood, autistic children may fall behind their peers in the areas of communication, social skills, and cognition.

Asperger's Syndrome is one of the conditions on the autism spectrum. Symptoms include social problems, vulnerability to sensory overload, awkward posture, and a tendency to take many figures of speech literally.

The day of prayer, which was held on Sunday, February 12, also called for greater awareness of the condition, better public services, tolerance and understanding.

Prayers will also be said for educational strategies to help teacher in mainstream and special schools, and improved access to training and jobs.
