A 29-year-old woman was seriously sexually assaulted by two men at Earlswood station.

The woman was walking through the underpass at the unmanned station at around 4.30pm on Friday, January 27, when two men approached and threatened her with a knife.

The victim, from the Tadworth area, was attacked and sexually assaulted.

British Transport Police are reviewing CCTV footage from the day and appealed for witnesses who were in the area at the time or remember seeing anything suspicious to come forward.

The assault has raised concerns about safety at the station, which is only manned from 6.30am to 10.30am weekdays.

A member of staff said: "It is busy in rush hours but apart from that it is very quiet and there is only one train an hour, others come through but don't stop."

Commuters passing through the station on Monday were shocked that the incident had happened.

One said: "It is worrying, I come through here every day and 4pm is not a time when I would expect something like that to happen, it certainly makes you think."

Another said: "This station is very quiet and I have felt a bit scared here at times but it still shocks me that it could happen.

"There are a lot of houses round here, you would think someone would have heard something."

A spokesman for train operator Southern, which is responsible for the station, said: "It is a very quiet station and it does not necessitate having members of staff. It does have CCTV on the platforms and at the station entrance.

"It is a very unfortunate incident and I expect we will be reviewing security at this station. We will be speaking to the British Transport Police to see if they felt there was a need for that. This is certainly a one-off incident and is very rare in this area."

Surrey Police said there were no plans to put any extra resources in place in the area.

Witness appeal notices are on display at the station entrance and nearby shop.

One of the women's attackers has been described as black, 25 to 35-years-old, of medium build, with a shaved head and was wearing a dark green hooded top and jeans.

The other is said to be of mixed race, between 25 and 35, of slim build with shoulder length frizzy or curly brown hair and wore a faded black hooded top and jeans.
