A SHOPKEEPER has been fined £9,000 after council officers found his store was infested with rats and mice.
Joseph Ogunbiyi was prosecuted after officers from Greenwich Council discovered rodents at El Jay Food and Wine, Trafalgar Road, Greenwich.
The officers also found food on display in the shop which had been damaged and contaminated by rats.
Ogunbiyi was fined during a hearing at Greenwich Magistrates' Court on August 17.
The court heard the shop had been closed down for a short period last year as punishment for a similar offence.
Cabinet member for community safety Councillor Rajwant Sidhu said: "Putting public health at risk is an extremely serious matter and will not be tolerated."
