Residents urged to protect Greenwich wetland

CAMPAIGNERS living by an award-winning wetland are urging people to make their views known on proposed routes for the Greenwich Waterfront Transit.

Earlier this year, a consultation on a single route from Woolwich Town Centre to Abbey Wood raised a number of objections, with many residents concerned about bendy buses cutting across Gallions Park, Thamesmead.

The route would have also replaced a footpath, a cycle path and green space on one side of the adjacent Gallions Canal, as well as an island and part of the canal itself.

Transport for London (TfL) has now launched a new consultation with several options, including the original route.

Residents living near the canal, which is a breeding ground for swans, geese, moorhens and other wildlife, are again urging people to fight any route cutting through the wetland.

Joan Chilton, 51, of Delisle Road, said: "People have chosen to live here away from more urbanised areas and love the peace and quiet of a park where children can play outside in a safe environment."

Mrs Chilton and her fellow campaigners are urging residents to choose the existing highways along Western Way, Tom Cribb Road and Arsenal Way as the sole route options for the scheme.

This will avoid destruction of Gallions Park and Gallions Canal.

And the campaigners say any route along the Thames at Erebus Drive and the Thames shoreline is a non-starter as new housing developments are being built there.

Phase one of the TfL project would see a route between Woolwich town centre, Royal Arsenal, Thamesmead and Abbey Wood Station by 2008 or 2009. And it could convert to tram technology in the future.

Details of the options, along with questionnaires, have been delivered to properties within 400m of each route.

Responses can also be made by visiting tfl.gov.uk/gwt, emailing gwt@tfl.gov.uk or writing to Theo Dennison, GWT Consultation Manager, Transport for London, FREEPOST NAT 22450, London SW1 0BR. The consultation ends on January 21, 2005.
