ST ALBANS: Dump nappies for good

Paprents can help to reduce their carbon footprint and earn themselves a bit of extra cash at the same time by putting their nippers in re-usable nappies.

By simply swapping your huggies for washable cotton nappies, parents could in the fight against climate change and bank a £60 grant from St Albans District Council.

With more than three billion disposable nappies being dumped on landfill sites in the UK each year generating powerful green house gases, the council are hoping a cash incentive may persuade parents to bin disposables for good.

Next week the national Real Nappy Campaign will be demonstrating to mums and dads just how easy it is to do their bit for the environment by using cotton nappies.

Louise Palmer, recycling officer at the district council, said: "Disposing of single use nappies costs the council approximately £1.8 million a year and with landfill space rapidly running out, we need to divert as much waste as possible."

Last year more than 100 parents across the district swapped their huggies for cotton nappies as part of the scheme.

During Real Nappy Week (April 21-27) the cotton nappy users will be passing on their expert advice over a coffee to other parents at a Nappycino event in Maltings Art Theatre.

Sally Gordon, spokesperson for the Real Nappy Campaign, said: "We are delighted to be able to reassure parents that by using washable nappies they can reduce their impact on global warming and energy use as we are aware that these are key issues for families."
