Major plans for Green Belt sites

Three major housing developments are planned on Green Belt land near Smallford on the rural edge of St Albans.

On top of the 62 homes planned as part of the redevelopment of the Oaklands College main campus, the district council has received applications for 78 homes outside Beaumont School, and a further 38 in Highfield Lane.

Plans for a sports hall, additional classroom and sports pitches at Beaumont have been included in the application from Hertfordshire County Council and joint applicants London School Of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, which owns land surrounding the school in Oakland Drive.

The houses are proposed on the existing playing fields at the front of the school while the new facilities will be developed on land currently owned by London School of Hygiene.

It is understood Beaumont is planning to buy land at the back of the school off the owners to accommodate the proposed facilities.

Each application will be heard by the council's planning committee at the end of June.
