Water company helps rare voles

Hatfield-based Three Valleys Water is throwing its weight behind the fight to save the water vole.

The aquatic mammals, which have declined dramatically across Britain over the last 20 years, were given new legal protection this month.

It is now a criminal offence to intentionally kill a water vole or to intentionally damage or disturb the places they use for shelter or protection.

In May, Three Valleys Water will be sponsoring a Chelsea Flower Show garden which will be a model of sensitive riverside management to provide a safe home for voles.

Managing director Andy Smith said: "The south-east of England is under increasing pressure from housing development and population growth and gardeners have a very important role to play in creating and maintaining wildlife corridors."

People whose gardens backon to a stream or river can encourage water voles by leaving a buffer strip two metres wide of grasses and other plants along the banks.
