RICHMOND: Flying the big green flag for eco-initatives

A Teddington primary school is the first in the borough to be awarded Green Flag status.

Stanley Junior School, in Stanley Road, has been given a big green flag to fly after independent inspectors judged it to be offsetting much of its negative environmental impact with positive initiatives.

The school has led the way by installing solar panels, recycling, selling Fairtrade and recycled stationery, and running an allotment and wild garden.

The Green Flag award scheme is run by Eco-Schools, which is supported by the Government and was set up to encourage all UK schools to make them "sustainable" by 2020.

Headteacher Ian Dickinson said: "This is a well-deserved reward for hard work by the children, our parent-governor eco-team and Adrian Corke, our science co-ordinator, in raising awareness of green issues and making a practical contribution."

The green scheme has three levels. Bronze and silver are self-assessed and the top green flag requires an independent inspection.

Schools have to reapply for the green flag every two years and are only granted permanent green flag status when they have achieved a fourth green flag.
