Boris pledges 10,000 trees on capital's streets

Around 10,000 trees could be planted around the capital's streets under new plans by mayoral candidate Boris Johnson.

The Tory MP's new policy sees him committed to planting the trees across London by the end of his first term if he is elected mayor.

Mr Johnson, who was speaking at a tree planting ceremony in Redbridge, said he will fund the £1m project by cancelling the current mayor's promotional publication The Londoner'.

He claimed the proposal would work in partnership with environmental charities to bring street trees to those areas of London that need them most.

"Trees give the capital its identity as one of the world's greenest cities. But these trees are not distributed equally around the capital. Many London streets, particularly in deprived areas, have no street trees at all," he said.

"Tree planting may appear to be a small gesture but will actually improve the lives of thousands of Londoners."

Mr Johnson claimed the scheme will see an average 250 trees planted in each area Londoners will be able to vote on the Greater London Assembly website to determine the order in which areas are planted.

The new policy proposal will also be part of Mr Johnson's environment manifesto which is published later this week.
