Politicians are backing residents, battling to stop a new recycling centre within two hundred metres of a primary school.
On Saturday, December 6, around 25 people attended a public meeting in Beddington Village Hall, and a protest outside the site at 112 Beddington Lane, Beddington will be recycled, where it is proposed that materials from roadworks.
A 450-signature petition was handed to Sutton Council on Tuesday, as the December 12 deadline for the end of the public consultation looms.
Neighbours are worried about possible effects on people’s health, along with the environmental impact of heavy lorries using the site.
Wandle Bank resident, Mike Dunne said: “The plans show there will be a bitumen tanker on site, which is close to residential homes and Beddington Park Primary School. We believe the bitumen will be heated, releasing carcinogenic particles.”
However, a spokesman for HS Works Ltd, who put forward the proposals, reassured people that bitumen will not be heated on the site.
He said: “Any pollution arising from the scheme that has the potential to affect air, land, or water quality has been carefully and scientifically considered by independent environmental experts, and the conclusions drawn show effects on health and the environment would be negligible.”
Tom Brake, MP for Carshalton and Wallington said: “I don’t consider these proposals to be acceptable either on environmental or safety grounds. Beddington Lane already has heavy traffic and this could be the straw that brakes the camel’s back with regard to the environment. On health and safety grounds, it appears there will be lorries operating near electricity pylons. I also hope to see what environmental readings have been taken, as there is already a large amount of dust, which is a risk to people living nearby.”
Conservative parliamentary candidate Ken Andrews said: “I totally oppose the introduction of another recycling plant so close to homes in Beddington. There is already enough industrialisation too close to the lovely village. In particular, this proposal, if agreed, would pump out noxious and potentially damaging fumes, which could be harmful to the local population.”
You can have your say until the proposals go before the council’s planning committee. No date has been set for this yet.
