The city's boroughs have taken part in the annual horticultural competition which is designed to make London a little greener.

The ‘London In Bloom’ campaign was created by the London tourist board in 1967 following the example of a similar french show.

The campaign, which is sponsored by Transport for London this year, encourages communities of all sizes to make positive and lasting changes for the better to their local areas for the benefit of the local community.

It incorporates floral displays, permanent planting, environmental issues: biodiversity and sustainability, as well as recycling, and a clean street scene. Hillingdon borough is a strong contender to snap-up the award on Friday.

The awards ceremony will take place at the prestigious Honourable Artillery Company, famously known as the oldest Regiment in the British Army.

It will be attended by Peter Hendy, Transport Commissioner, the Mayors of the London boroughs, representatives from the Museum of Garden History and the Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens amongst 250 guests.

The winner of the much sought after title will then go on to compete for the “Britain in Bloom” prize.
