A Winchmore Hill girl has been selected as a semi-finalist in a nationwide environmentally-friendly beauty contest.
Sonia Dham, 22, of Hillfield Park, was recently chosen with 26 others as a semi-finalist in the Miss Earth Greater London beauty pageant.
And if she is successful, Sonia will compete for the title of Miss Earth England.
Miss Earth was launched in 2001 in an attempt to promote the preservation of the environment.
Although many people have aspirations of becoming beauty queens, Miss Earth aims to reach a new audience and get a greater number of people involved in caring for the environment.
The pageant is a fashion-style show in which women from all over the country compete to win the title of Miss Earth UK.
Sonia was first attracted to the competition due to its uniqueness. And, after gaining a human geography degree from the University of London, Sonia became deeply interested about the aims of the pageant.
She said: "I have always been very interested in the environment, and I am very keen to help preserve the natural beauty in the world, especially here in London."
Sonia added: "Having been blessed to travel to so many beautiful countries I have witnessed through its beauty a great deal of poverty and illness, especially in children.
"I want to be able to help the many unfortunate children in the world, for hope of a better future."
The semi-finals will take place on Monday, July 14, at The Collection in Chelsea.
The top five competitors will go through to the grand final, where the overall winner will get the opportuity of a lifetime.
That is, as the official website says, "to represent England in the international televised Miss Earth with an audience of over 70 million people".
