Strike hits two St Albans schools

Striking teachers demanding more pay will largely close two St Albans secondary schools on Thursday.

Beaumont in Oakwood Drive and Marlborough in Watling Street have told parents they will close to most pupils as members of the National Union of Teachers will be on a one-day strike.

Marlborough headteacher Annie Thompson said: "Because of the numbers of staff involved in the strike it is not possible for me to cover the teaching of lessons without compromising on health and safety.

"In consultation with governors, the school will be closed to all students. T "There will, however, be teaching for some post-16, Year 11 and Year Ten students and individual members of staff may also invite their exam groups into school on that day."

She stressed that the teachers' grievance was with the Government, which has offered them an annual increase of 2.45 per cent, rather than the school or the county council.

Beaumont has also been forced to close except for sixth-formers and students due to take exams that day.

Sir Frederic Osborne and Monks Walk in Welwyn Garden City have also decided to close on Thursday.
