Flower power: Children help transform an old derelict paddling pool at Dukes Meadows, Chiswick

Schoolchildren from Cavendish Primary School, Chiswick, got their hands dirty last week as they helped transform an old derelict paddling pool at Dukes Meadows into a wildflower garden with 2,000 plug plants.

Despite the chilly weather, the year four pupils were enthusiastic as their deputy headteacher Mick Flaherty oversaw the planting into the sandy soil.

For two mornings, the children turned up to plant birdsfoot trefoil, sorrel, ox-eye daisies, yarrow, plantain, cowslip, lady's bedstraw, campion, selfheal, mallows, buttercups and cornflowers.

The garden, created with the help of a Breathing Spaces lottery grant and Barratt Homes, will have benches and a gate.

The wildflower plug plants were originally potted in the Chiswick House Kitchen Garden by children from St Mary's Primary School.

Ecologist Chris Slack provided expertise to encourage wildflowers and insects. The gravel was excavated from the bed of the Thames.
