Hackbridge Primary gets an extra helping at breakfast

Primary school children have been given an early morning boost with a grant for their breakfast club.

Hackbridge Primary School’s breakfast club has been given £450 from Kellog’s cereal company.

They are one of 500 schools across the country to receive the award.

Hackbridge primary has provided healthy breakfasts to pupils for 12 years and recently changed its hours to allow parents to catch earlier trains to work.

Councillor Kirsty Jerome, executive member for education and schools on Sutton council, said: "Breakfast clubs give children a good start to the day, so it’s great news that the Hackbridge club has been given a boost.

"The Hackbridge club helps children to get set up for the busy school day ahead, as well as providing a bit of help to parents who have to start work early."

Headteacher, Jacquie Fairhurst said they will use the money to buy new equipment and toys for the children to play with.

When society needs 'breakfast clubs' society is going in the wrong direction progress wise.

@GreenBrown. I totally agree with you. Today, 'progress' seems to be defined as 'taking less responsibility & have other people do the work for you'.
If parents cannot take the time to feed their children before school - I hate to think what the next generation will be conditioned to behave like.
I read a similar article, where a nursery has to put on 'toileting workshops' for parents that have not toilet trained their 3-4 year olds.

Nothing amazes me these days!

True, I wish all mums could stay home and take care of their kids but even married mothers are finding their husbands don't make enough money to make ends meet and breakfast clubs, as sad as it is, provides a time to drop kids off a little early before school starts so they can go out to work for a 9am start. No one likes to do it, most mums want to stay home and be with their kids, but an uncaring government, lack of affordable housing where many families are forced to rent privately, and a rise in all bills means most women have no choice. Sad but true. It will destroy society but until people are paid a living wage we will face a decline in parents able to care for their children. Top it off, this generation is faced with a huge bill for university for this next batch of kids of which we hope to raise and give a good education to so they won't depend on benefits.

I know just what it's like. I've even had to give my time share cat training in the use of the Cat Mate cat flap. He picked up the going out technique after a few days but Ginger from next door looks less than impressed with his fumbling entering efforts with awkward pawses.
