As part of National Apprenticeship week, developer Barratt Homes is highlighting the opportunities for young people available during the construction of its latest development, New South Quarter in Croydon.
The development, on Purley Way, offered Romford resident Billy Davis, 21, the opportunity to do an apprenticeship in carpentry.
Mr Davis, who had joined Barratt Homes in 2009, said: “I was really keen to do an apprenticeship and particularly wanted to work with a large company like Barratt Homes.
“Here I am gaining a wide range of experience and skills which will be so useful in the future.”
While on site he has had the opportunity to work on both internal and external sittings, including roof work outside and internally, skirting, door frames, doors and staircases.
The Trade Apprenticeship program offered Mr Davis a combination of on the job training supported by technical study at college. He will finish in August, by which time he will have earned an S/NVQ qualification.
New South Quarter has created five apprentices so far, with seven more due to start on the next phase.
Barratt work with Reds10, who arrange apprentices for the site in partnership with Croydon Council.
New South Quarter Development is an ongoing project consisting of over 900 units. The first flats were opened in 2009.
