Sutton’s secondary schools are top of the class, according to the latest league tables from the Department for Education.

The tables rank schools according to the percentage of pupils achieving five or more A*-C grade GCSEs, including maths and English.

Final figures reveal 74.7 per cent of pupils in Sutton achieved top grades, more than 1.5 per cent ahead of Kensington and Chelsea, which made the number two spot.

Five Sutton schools are listed among the top 200 state schools in the country.

Glenthorne High School made the list of the most improved schools of last year.

Councillor Kirsty Jerome, executive member for education and schools at Sutton Council, said: "This is excellent news and confirms something we have known for a long time; that Sutton has some of the very best schools in the country.

"To top the table, ahead of every other local authority area in England, is a real achievement.

The results of young people in Sutton have improved year on year, reflecting their hard work and they should be incredibly proud.

"This result comes just two weeks after we opened the new £50m 1,400 place Stanley Park High, and we will be working closely with the school, and those which have since become academies, to ensure these excellent results continue."
