Calypso fun at school Caribbean day

PUPILS swapped a cold gloomy January day in Marlow for a day in the sunny tropics when they held a Caribbean day.

Children from Foxes Piece School sampled Caribbean culture in a series of events organised by learning support assistant Monica Hawkins.

Chris Taylor, headteacher, said: "The day was exciting, enjoyable and educational. It enabled the children to appreciate and enjoy a different culture."

The Juma Steel Band Workshop put on a performance for the whole school on Tuesday. The children clapped and tapped along with the music and listened to the sound of steel pans and drums.

Following the concert, children took part in activities including traditional Caribbean story telling, art and dance and calypso singing.

They played cricket and tasted exotic fruits and punches. Pupils also took a turn playing the steel pans and afterwards visiting musicians taught them about the drums' history.
