Lewisham was rated the worst performing borough in London for GCSEs as schools were judged on the basis of raw results for the last time.

Secondary schools are currently considered “underperforming” if fewer than 40 per cent of pupils get five GCSEs at grade A*-C including English and maths, and if the school has a below average score for pupil’s progress.

But next year, schools will be measured on a broader range of results across eight subjects, which has been welcomed by headteachers.

Here’s how Bromley, Lewisham and Greenwich fared based on data from last summer’s examinations.

LEWISHAM

Lewisham borough performed the worst in London with 51.9 per cent of pupils achieving five good GCSEs – 5.2 per cent below the national average of 57.1 per cent.

Although Lewisham had the lowest per cent of pupils across the London boroughs with five GCSEs at grade A*-C, schools in the area are not considered to be “underperforming”.

Councillor Paul Maslin, Lewisham’s cabinet member for children and young people, said: “Improving educational outcomes is a top priority for Lewisham.

"We want achievement in our secondary schools to match the excellent levels reached in our primary schools.

“Our new leadership team in the council’s children and young people’s service has lost no time in developing a detailed plan of action with our secondary schools as partners and we are working hard to both support and challenge individual schools and on cross borough initiatives.

“We are setting up an education commission that, among other things, will look at whether there are any more radical or leading edge approaches we could adopt at borough or school level.

"This commission will make its recommendations by April 2016.”

BROMLEY

Bromley was rated one of the best performing boroughs in London for GCSEs.

Sixty-eight per cent of pupils achieved five GCSEs at grade A*-C – more than 10 per cent above the national average.

GREENWICH

In the Greenwich borough, 57.7 per cent of pupils achieved five GCSEs at grades A*-C.
