A new Greenwich school focussing on languages is on course to open later this year.

The International Academy of Greenwich (IAG) will welcome its first 100 Year Seven pupils in September.

The new secondary school will eventually house 700 pupils, and also feature a foreign language centre.

A permanent site in Eltham Road, currently the Bowring Group Sports Centre, has been acquired with a view to building the school’s permanent home there.

But they must submit a full planning application to the council, which has to be approved, and follow the consultation process before any building work begins.

MORE TOP STORIES In the meantime a temporary site – which has not been disclosed – but near Eltham Road, will be their short-term home.

The school will focus on the International Baccalaureate (IB) and foreign languages on the curriculum, and will be led by newly-appointed principal Smita Bora.

Nick Zienau, CEO of the IAG, said: “It’s fantastic for us to finally see the school becoming a reality after waiting for a site for three years.

“Sites in London are hard to find and we feel lucky to have found both a temporary and a permanent site so close to each other."
