A Woolwich school put into special measures has turned itself around to become outstanding in just over a year.

Foxfield Primary school, along Sandbach Road, was rated inadequate when it was visited by Ofsted last May, dropping from its previous good rating.

The government body gave it the lowest possible rating in all four categories it was examined in; the achievement of pupils, the quality of teaching, the behaviour and safety of pupils and leadership and management.

As a result the school, which has 675 pupils, was placed in special measures.

The failing report stated: “Too much teaching is inadequate. Leaders, managers and governors have not taken the action needed to stop the decline in achievement, behaviour and the quality of teaching since the previous inspection.

“Pupils do not enjoy a rich, board and balanced programme of work.

“Parents do not have confidence in the school.”

Issues surrounding behaviour and bullying were also raised.

MORE TOP STORIES In the wake of the findings a partnership was formed with neighbouring school Woodhill Primary, along Woodhill.

Fast forward a little over a year later, and the school has achieved an astonishing turnaround.

Their latest inspection report, published earlier this month, now found the school be to be outstanding in the same four categories – the highest available.

Steered by executive headteacher Rob Carpenter and headteacher Rupinder Bansil, the school is one of only five schools inspected since 2005 to accomplish this.

The glowing report highlighted the school’s achievement, saying: “The quality of teaching is exemplary and pupils make outstanding progress from a low base.

“The governing body is formidable. The school is used as a beacon of excellence, both locally and nationally.”

The curriculum, personal development of students and equality was also highly praised.

Mr Carpenter reflected on the schools’ success, saying: “We have received fantastic support from families and the local authority.

“Our children have the highest aspirations and are living proof that by living our values, anything is possible.

“We are so proud of every single one of them.”
