The parent of a Greenwich Community College student has hit out at the centre, branding its decision to move the leisure and tourism course from Eltham to Plumstead as "unacceptable".

Victoria Mackensie, whose son 17-year-old son Iwan is in the second year of the course, has encouraged students to fight the college's decision.

Around 22 students are currently signed up for the two-year course which is taught at the Eltham Centre on Archery Road.

But due to the move students fear their education with be compromised, with many considering quitting to find full-time work rather than achieve their qualification.

Miss Mackensie, 38, said the students "should be admired" for their ambition to achieve in further education.

She told News Shopper: "They keep on about youth crime, these kids are trying to better their lives and this is how they're being treated - it's not acceptable.

"They're trying to carve out careers for themselves and this is the first port of call for how they're treated."

The Downham mum criticised the rushed consultation process and said the students should have been made aware that the course could move when they signed up over a year ago.

She added: "They're worried because they liked the smaller centre, they liked the intimacy of it. Because it's so much smaller in the classroom they are getting really good tutor time."

A spokeswoman for the college said it's well known that the college is currently facing "very difficult times".

She said: "This means that decisions have to be made to ensure that the college is in the best position in the future.

"Due to very low enrolment numbers, we decided to move the travel courses to Plumstead so that we can make sure that we can continue to deliver and provide the support that is needed.

"There was a careful consultation period involving the students and their parents/carers."
