Three schools benefitted from £1,000 as part of a competition to design a News Shopper front page.

Numerous schools entered, both public and private, to receive the top prize of £500 on the theme of community issues at Petts Wood Pharmacy along Queensway yesterday (July 16).

Bromley’s Burnt Ash Primary, in Rangefield Road, were victorious with Year 4 pupil Davina Ngenegbo’s story on Brook Lane’s community garden.

Davina, nine, said: “It felt really good to win since I’m young most people wouldn’t think I would be able to win a competition like this.

“I was really happy, I was jumping up and down with joy.”

Headteacher Leah Crawley explained the money would be re-invested into the community garden.

She said: “We’ve been working on the garden for some time and we’re very excited about the impact they’re having.

“We’re really proud of her for winning.”

One of the runners-up was Orpington’s Holy Innocents School, which received £250.

Five pupils worked together on the front page which was based on their fundraising over the last two years.

MORE TOP STORIES One of the authors, Molly Abai, 11 said: “We were very proud to receive the award on our schools behalf.”

Headteacher Ryan Langford added the money would go towards new playground equipment for the school.

He said: “We were very excited to take part in the competition, the children enjoy writing and they worked with a retired journalist who comes in to volunteer.”

The second runner up was Orpington’s Crofton Academy, which also received £250.

The front page, written by Evie Carter and Keira Hotchkin, both eight, focussed on the school’s charity week.

Evie was born with a serious heart condition so Year Three chose charity Echo to fundraise for.

She said: “I was quite surprised because I didn’t know if we would win. I was really excited and I couldn’t sleep last night.”

Assistant head Tricia Jolly said: “It’s a fantastic achievement and we’re going to use the money to convert our gazebos into a reading, colouring and game den.”

The prize money was donated by Gulraj Dhillon, owner of Petts Wood Pharmacy.

Mr Dhillon said: “We run a community award to give something back, it was great to see the children here today.”
