Parents have set up a campaign against changing the name of Bromley's Prince Plain Primary as part of its conversion to a religious school.

The school, near Bromley Common, became an academy and part of the Aquinas Church of England (CofE) Education Trust from January 1.

They are now consulting on converting to a school with 'religious designation' as well as three potential new names.

These are St Augustine, Isabella Gilmore and Trinity, with Trinity the most popular according to a poll on the website.

Bernadette Nezar, 36, has three children at the school and co-founded a Facebook page called 'Save Prince's Plain Primary's name / we want Prince's Plain Academy', with more than 440 likes.

The mum from Petts Wood said: "We're proud of the name. There's lots of history and tradition to the name, generations have gone to Princes Plain and more in the future will.

"They’ve got three potential names but I don't know why keeping Princes Plain isn't one of them.

"Changing the name doesn't change anything about the school."

The childminder added: "I'm collecting ‘likes’ until the 8th [of March] and then I’ll present the results."

The school began consulting on potential changes - which could include a new uniform and logo - since last September to end on April 17.

Some feared other faiths being marginalised or children persuaded to follow a religious path contrary to their parents' beliefs.

Barry Blakelock, recently confirmed as the permanent headteacher, said: "Absolutely not. Parents still have the right to withdraw their children from religious education.

"Formalising our status as a CofE school gives great protection to other faiths.

"We need a name that reflects the ethos of the school if we become CofE.

"Princes Plain CofE isn’t really an option."

Co-founder of the Facebook page Helen Jones, 32, whose four-year-old daughter and six-year-old son attend the school, said: "If the name changes it looks as though we're trying to hide something."

The full time mum, from Whitebeam Road, added: "I'm not fussed with the CofE status; it's a positive thing we just don't feel the name needs to be changed."

Governors will decide on changes to be announced at the end of April.
