Prime minister David Cameron welcomed the headteacher of Clarendon School to 10 Downing street as part of a reception for outstanding teachers from across the country.

John Kipps has worked at a school for children with moderate learning difficulties in Hampton for more than 20 years and was nominated to attend the reception by Conservative parliamentary candidate for Twickenham, Dr Tania Mathias, based on recommendations from parents.

Mr Kipps, who made the trip on Wednesday, said: "I was surprised and honoured to be nominated for this event, and to attend this celebration on behalf of the pupils, parents, staff and governors of Clarendon, who all play such an important role in making our school a nurturing, exciting and engaging learning community."

Mr Cameron said delivering the best schools and skills for young people is at the heart of his economic plan.

He said: "With such dedicated and inspiring teachers in our schools I know we can ensure our children get the best chance to succeed. It was an honour to celebrate their commitment at this reception."
