A Greenwich awards ceremony has honoured teachers and staff for their exceptional contribution to education.

The first Royal Greenwich School Awards took place at Woolwich Town Hall this month and saw staff nominated for teacher, governor, and support staff of the year.

The teacher of the year award went to Maxine Ferguson from Eltham Hill Secondary who was praised for "transforming lives".

Governor of the year went to Ian Taylor, former chair of governors at Mulgrave Primary in Woolwich. 

And the support staff of the year prize went to Bobbie McCabe, higher-level teaching assistant at Cherry Orchard Primary in Charlton.

Leader of Greenwich Council Councillor Denise Hyland praised staff for working together to ensure children get the best education in the borough.

She said: "In Greenwich children are more likely to go to a good or outstanding school than in the rest of the country. We are really proud of that."
