History loving students saw the story of King Charles I brought to life after being the first in the country to take part in a unique civil war experience.

Year 8 students from Richmond Park Academy were invited to Banqueting House in Westminster by Historic Royal Palaces (HRP) and had the opportunity to review the evidence of the king's crimes against Parliament.

The pupils worked in groups to quiz the monarch on why he married a Catholic and why he dismissed Parliament before finding him guilty.

Hannah Underwood, history teacher at Richmond Park Academy, said: "The teaching staff at Banqueting House, together with the actor who played King Charles I, were wonderful. At Richmond Park Academy we go above and beyond to enrich the education of our students and what better way to bring history to life than examining the English Civil War sites through this unique learning experience.

"We are extremely grateful to be the first group to have been given this opportunity and I hope that this is something that HRP will be able to offer to many more key stage three students."

Students were also taken on a guided tour around what would have been the original Palace of Whitehall, taking in Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey and the Houses of Parliament.
