A cheerful and popular caretaker was remembered during a day of music, reflection and fundraising.

Ghanaian born Kaiser Abrahams, 51, died unexpectedly in July after a stroke, and left Esher Church School determined to help his sons in Ghana.

Teachers, parents and pupils came up with Kaiser Day, which took place on Friday, October 24, and saw three members of Mr Abraham's extended family come from Ghana to be part of the event.

Money raised will go towards sending his belongings back to his wife and to pay for his children, Nicholas, 14, and Daniel, 17, to finish school in Ghana.

Maria, the elder sister of Mr Abrahams, said: "I am overwhelmed that the children and staff thought so much of Kaiser. They have become an extension of our family and the ripples from the wonderful things that are doing today will reach a long way, back to his sons in Ghana."

Events during the day included a special assembly featured Ghanaian music and dance and art classes.

Pupils paid a contribution to wear either African dress or casual clothes featuring the green, red and yellow colours of Ghana's flag, instead of school uniforms.

A collection from parents at the school gate raised about £1,000.

Cathy Bell, headteacher, said: "Kaiser was a breath of fresh air - a real gentleman who exuded kindness and warmth, as well as having the ability to keep the school in as near perfect a state as it is ever going to get."
