People fearful for the safety of children travelling to Collis Primary School in the mornings have been told pupils will receive road safety training.

Neighbours have written to the school regarding children riding scooters across driveways without checking for cars, asking the school to have parents to supervise more closely on the school run.

Nikki Howes, who lives in nearby Southmead Gardens, said she had been campaigning for months about improving the safety of the school run.

She said: "Someone’s going to get killed one day, many parents don’t pay enough attention and the kids just shoot across driveways on their scooters.

"I’m really concerned about it and think someone should be out there to supervise in the mornings."

The school’s headteacher Jane Way said she understood so many children using pavements around the school at drop-off and pick-up times could be difficult for local drivers.

She said: "We regularly discuss road safety with children in their classes and in assemblies, and they receive road safety training that specifically points out the potential hazard posed by driveways.

"We also remind parents to closely supervise their children if they are coming to school on foot or by scooter, and we ask parents who must come by car to be very aware of the safety of all."
