A parent has complained after a number of Twickenham Academy students were sent home on their first day back from summer holidays.

One said the school sent home about 100 students today, including year 7s, for wearing trousers that were too tight and deemed to be "provocative".

The parent said children, who were wearing trousers available to buy online, were also sent home without their knowledge.

But the school downplayed the claims and said a "small percentage" of students were sent home for wearing incorrect uniform and were required to return once they had changed. The school said all parents were informed, or provisions were made.

Tracy Ward, principal of Twickenham Academy, denied claims 100 students were sent home for wearing trousers which were too tight, and said the number was in fact nine, who were sent home to change out of jeans and leggings.

Ms Ward said: "At Twickenham Academy, we take the safety of our students very seriously. After consulting with parents this morning, a small number of students agreed to go home and change their jeans before returning to lessons. Parents were generally very supportive.

"I think when people were talking to them [students], we had nine children who had the jeans issues this morning and we spoke to children about wearing leggings."

Ms Ward said the school’s uniform rules were clear and had not changed since the last academic year.

She said: "They were very clearly told they should be complying with the college dress code. We spoke to them about it last term as well."

Asked whether parents had been informed before students were sent home, Ms Ward said parents were contacted and "provisions were made" for students with incorrect uniform whose parents could not be reached.
