Children at Hampton Junior School have been treated to a lesson from on how to eat like athletes as part of the school’s fit for life week.

The talk by fitness journalist Kate Percy taught children the importance of healthy eating, but also gave them some practical guidance on how to make their own power breakfasts, including smoothies and granola.

The lesson is part of an ongoing initiative by the school to help children make better food choices.

Data gathered by the Health and Social Care Information Centre showed at least 9.5 per cent of children attending reception class in 2011/12 were obese.

Headteacher Helen Lockey said: “The importance of ensuring all children understand a healthy balanced diet is vital to leading an active life.”
