Mitcham man arrested in anti-terror raids

A Mitcham man has been arrested by anti-terror police following early morning raids targeting the Tamil Tigers.

The 33-year-old is being held by police at a central London station on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism.

The raid was timed with searches in Newtown, Wales, following which another two men - aged 46 and 39 - are being questioned.

A Met Police spokesman said the arrests were part of a long-term investigation into the alleged funding and procurement activity in support of terrorism overseas.

Today's arrests follow charges against two Norbury and South Croydon men last year.

One was charged with arranging meetings to support the Tamil Tigers, including one in Hyde Park in 2006, receiving £1,500 for the group and possessing weapons manuals and body armour for the group.

The second man was accused of helping manage the meeting in Hyde Park.
