Jailed for £5m cocaine smuggle
A Dartford man has been jailed for eight years for his part in smuggling cocaine worth £5m in a wine lorry.
The drug was loaded into the vehicle when it stopped in Belgium on its way to Britain from France.
Bordeaux bottles in the crates were replaced with cocaine filled bottles and hidden among the genuine wines.
Judge Sir Geoffrey Nice described the operation as a conspiracy "of the worst kind".
Jason Young, of Bath Road, was sentenced at the Old Bailey last Friday (April 18). The 37-year-old pleaded guilty to conspiracy to supply drugs.
Young was arrested on April 4 last year in a Dartford pub garden near the proposed transfer point off Cotton Lane, Dartford.
He was waiting to collect a share of the 42kg of cocaine.
Alister Morin was arrested on the same day as he was driving to the transfer point.
The 34-year-old, from Chadwell Heath, Essex, denied conspiracy to supply but he was convicted by the jury and sentenced to 15 years in prison.
James Scarciglia, aged 30, from Harrow, north London, and Michael Linker, from Bristol, both admitted conspiracy to supply drugs.
Linker, aged 37, was sentenced to 14 years in prison and Scarciglia is due to be sentenced on Friday (April 25).
David Quick, from Wickford, Essex, was also on trial charged with conspiracy to supply and possession of a controlled drug with intent to supply.
The jury could not agree on a verdict for the 26-year-old so he faces a retrial on July 7.
