KINGSTON: Police figures show fall in crime

Crime has fallen by 6 per cent in the last year, according to Kingston police.

Violent crimes now account for one in five incidents as the number of offences reported during 2007/08 dropped to 12,276.

Car crime saw the largest real terms increase jumping from 1,170 in 2006/07 to 1,274 last year.

Only a few other categories saw small increases, including the number of burglaries, racist crimes and robberies of businesses.

The largest single reduction was in the number of violent crimes, down 14 per cent to 2,575 offences, while overall numbers of robberies fell 6 per cent, down to 285.

Domestic crimes saw a drop to 654 offences, a fall of 17 per cent.

Rapes reported to police stayed constant with 28 reported last year. There was only one homicide in the borough, compared to the two the year before.

The force has not released its detection rates, showing what percentage of each crime was solved.
