ELMBRIDGE: Stolen van pulled from river
 |
| Environment Agency workers inspect the van |
A stolen van which was floating in the River Mole in Cobham for over a week was finally pulled from the water by a team from the Environment Agency.
The red VW transit was first spotted on Sunday, March 30, bobbing in the river around 200 metres downstream from Bridge Road.
Police were called to the scene and a helicopter used to scan the river and surrounding areas for anyone who may have been in the VW Transporter van.
Police divers were unable to reach it to check if there was anybody inside until Wednesday, April 2, because of difficult conditions in the river. Their search revealed that the vehicle was empty.
On Friday the tide was finally low enough to pull the van from the river using a tractor.
Police have now discovered the the van, which was stripped of its number plates, was stolen from Winstanley road in Cobham on March 29.
Police are now investigating if it had been used in any criminal activity.
The vehicle may have entered the river via St Andrew's Church car park where tyre tracks were found leading directly into the water.
Anyone with any information should contact Surrey Police on 0845 125 2222 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
