The daughter and granddaughter of Coronation Street star Johnny Briggs have been banned from going into any shop in Surrey after years of shoplifting linked to drug addiction.

Karen Briggs, 49, and her daughter Emma Beach, 27, have committed nearly 100 crimes between them - aggressively stealing from shops, churches and service stations for years.

Their crimes became so great that Mr Briggs who played Mike Baldwin in the TV soap for 30 years has distanced himself from them.

Briggs, of Hamilton Avenue, Cobham, was jailed for 150 days in 1999 after stealing some of her mother's jewellery.

She was convicted for a further nine months after admitting burglary and theft at two Cobham churches in 2011, while her daughter was ordered to carry out community service.

Last year Briggs was jailed for six months after shoplifting almost £400 worth of candles. Appearing again in court in July 2014, she was given an eight-week prison sentence for stealing meat, fish and bottled sauces from the BP service station at Leatherhead.

At this point Briggs had tallied 32 convictions for 52 offences, while Beach had 16 convictions for 23 offences.

Elmbridge Safer Neighbourhood Team Inspector Sarah Milligan said: "Briggs and Beach are prolific shoplifters who are also verbally and physically abusive towards shop assistants in the county.

"They offend at will and have absolutely no regard for the law."

The ban given to the pair yesterday, which lasts for two years, is part of criminal behaviour orders given to both after they pleaded guilty to the theft of alcohol from Marks and Spencer in Staines.

They will also have to pay £285 to the court.

Briggs and Beach are prohibited from:

  • Behaving in a manner or inciting others to behave in a manner either verbally or physically in any public place which causes or is likely to cause alarm, harassment or distress to any person in the county of Surrey.
  • Being in the company of Karen Louise Briggs/Emma Louise Beach in any shop or shopping centre in the county of Surrey.
  •  Entering any premises in Surrey which has served Karen Louise Briggs/Emma Louise Beach with a written banning notice.
