A 21-year-old Romford man is one of the first people to be convicted of a ‘revenge porn’ offence.

Jason Asagba, of Chadwell Heath Lane, was charged with disclosing sexual photographs and films with intent to cause distress under Section 33 of the Criminal Justice and Courts Act 2015.

The offence happened on April 16, just three days after legislation came into force, when he threatened to post intimate pictures of a 20-year-old woman from Reading on social media.

A Thames Valley Police spokesman said Asagba subsequently posted the images on Facebook and sent them to members of the victim's family.

He was charged with the offence on May 15 and pleaded guilty the following day at Reading Magistrates' Court.

Asagba is on bail to be sentenced on August 7.

Detective Constable Steven Rose said: "This was an extremely distressing case for the victim.

"However with these new powers, anyone found committing these offences will be dealt with by the court.

"We believe that this is the first conviction of the new offence in the country, which highlights the fact that Thames Valley Police takes this crime extremely seriously and will investigate such reports."
