A CEREMONY to celebrate the work and commitment of Swindon's school governors will take place at the Oakfield campus tomorrow.

The Mayor, Coun Ray Fisher (Con, Stratton), will be presenting awards to eight school governors.

There will be two Edwin Harvey awards presented, which are for exceptional service to school governance. The award is named after the man who founded the Association of Swindon Governors.

Coun Garry Perkins (Con, Shaw and Nine Elms), the lead member for children's services, said: "I applaud the Association of Swindon Governors for making these awards to their colleagues.

"The council values enormously the voluntary contribution made by school governors in Swindon and places great importance on ensuring that high quality support is available to them.

"I know that many people find being a governor a rewarding experience and have been able to use the knowledge and skills acquired as a governor in their workplace."

School governors work with headteachers to help a school aim for high standards.

Six of the governors receiving awards have been governors for more than 20 years.
