ST ALBANS: Local builders in price probe
A building firm in Park Street is under investigation for price fixing by the Office of Fair Trading (OFT).
John Sisk and Son, based in Curo Park, Frogmore, is one of 112 firms named by the competition watchdog, which believes they may have colluded to con customers, mostly in the public sector, by inflating prices.
Investigators believe companies have deliberately given excessive quotes so other businesses get away with charging more than they otherwise would - in some cases the "unsuccessful" bidders are believed to have been given a slice of the profits.
Forty of the named firms have admitted the practice, but the rest are being given two months to respond to the allegations.
While the investigation is unlikely to be concluded before the end of the year, firms could be fined as much as ten per cent of their turnover.
The OFT will not disclose details of the allegations against particular firms, but most are thought to relate to major construction contracts for local councils and health authorities.
Alison Farrant of John Sisk and Son said: "We have fully cooperated with the OFT during its investigation and will continue to do so. We will be responding to the statement of objections in due course.
"As a company, we are committed to the highest standards in our industry and in particular to compliance with competition law."
