Shah rejects 'divisive' complaint
Cllr Shah dismissed a complaint by a fellow councillor
Cllr Shah dismissed a complaint by a fellow councillor

The newly-elected London Assembly member for Brent and Harrow has dismissed a complaint to a council watchdog as underhand electioneering.

Navin Shah said Councillor Jeremy Zied's complaint to the Standard Board of England is a waste of time, but added he is not surprised.

He said: "Knowing Jeremy Zied, nothing he does shocks me anymore.

"I would prefer not to waste my time dealing with ridiculous things like this, but it is this kind of slur and underhand tactics that he and his colleagues in the Conservatives indulge in on a regular basis."

Cllr Zied wrote to the standards board last week, complaining about some of the campaign literature distributed by Cllr Shah during the last two years.

He alleged it "exploits ethnic and religious differences", seeks to divide the Harrow's population, and was damaging to the name of the council.

Cllr Zied wrote: "I firmly believe the actions of Cllr Navin Shah and his Harrow Labour campaign are straying into the politics of race, creating and exacerbating ethnic and religious division to exclude and alienate the wider community."

But Cllr Shah, leader of the Labour group on Harrow Council who was elected to the London Assembly on Thursday, May 1, claimed his actions were part of a campaign of "cheap propaganda".

The standards board, which monitors member of public service organisations including local councils and the London Assembly, is looking at the complaint but has not decided whether to investigate.
