Dartford man pleads for help to come home after balcony fall in Turkey
3:33pm Friday 19th October 2012 in News By Kelly Smale
A 25-YEAR-OLD Dartford man who broke his back after falling from a balcony in Turkey is pleading for people to help him come home.
Last week News Shopper reported how Charlie Smith, of Lowerfield Street, flew out to Marmaris on September 27 for an 11-day holiday with his mum Heather Parry and seven-year-old brother Kane Parry.
But on October 5 disaster struck when the father-of-one fell from their third floor balcony at the Green Nature Resort and Spa - breaking his back in three places.
His family are desperately trying to raise £12,000 to pay for medical bills and to fly him home on a stretcher.
Speaking from his hospital bed in Turkey, Charlie told News Shopper: "I'm in a lot of pain today.
"I was moving around in bed because I didn't feel any pain but I was an idiot and I just hope I haven't damaged it even more.
"I'm laying completely flat, I can't move at all unless staff do it for me because they know how to do it properly."
He added: "I've been alright, I've had a couple of days where I have been feeling down but I have got a lot of support.
"Lots of things are being done for me and fundraising events - it's amazing.
"My friends are organising a drum and bass night because it's my favourite music, it means a lot to me.
"It's what's keeping me going."
Charlie has undergone an operation to remove bone fragment from his spinal cord but needs a second operation with specialist equipment, which is only available in the UK.
Charlie said: "They said I had a maximum of three weeks to get the operation otherwise I won't walk again and I have already been here two weeks.
"I'm being positive but I'm really worried."
Choking back tears, he added: "I really can't wait to see my child.
"I just pray to God I can walk again so we can do things together.
"My mum has been amazing, she has been my rock through all of this.
"I'm lucky I'm still here."
Charlie says the hospital staff have been nice and the food is good.
He said: "If anyone can help please donate. I need help to get back home, I want to get to see my son and I want to walk again."
Miss Parry, of Havelock Road, Gravesend, has raised £7,000 by selling Charlie's car, pawning jewellery and borrowing money from friends.
It is enough to fly him home next week but she will have to remain in the country for a few days to pay for the medical bills.
She told News Shopper: "He's got to have this operation within a week otherwise he won't walk again.
"There's a special machine at Kings College Hospital like a hoover, to take the bone out of his spinal column.
"The haven't got the machine to do it in Turkey.
"He's really upset at the moment. It's finally hitting him what's happened, it's an absolute nightmare."
She added: "My main concern is that they are taking him to Darent Valley Hospital.
"It's imperative he gets this operation done.
"Kings said they won't take him - he has to go to his local hospital and get transferred. It's wasting time."
A King's College Hospital spokeswoman said: "We are discussing with Darent Valley Hospital about the best way to manage Charlie's care when he returns to the UK."
A Darent Valley Hospital spokeswoman added negotiations were ongoing with Kings to let him go there directly.
A Facebook group called Charlie Smith Recovery Fund has raised around £700 to bring him home.
Family friends are holding a fundraising football match at Goals, in Green Street Green Road, Dartford, on Friday (October 26) from 8.30pm.
While Charlie's friends are hosting a Save to Rave event at Source of Sound in Tonbridge on November 16 from 9pm to 6am.
Entry costs £10 and the DJs and MCs will perform for free.
Cash raised from both events will be donated to the Charlie Smith Recovery Fund.

What is a "balcony incident" I can understand if someone was mucking about or drunk like that girl a year or so ago (although she hadn't bothered with insurance) but in this case was the balcony safe etc
Guess who ;) AGAIN !

Its the insurance company that everyone should be throwing insults at.
Cannot believe they won't fly him home.
So sad, hope he gets the treatment he needs.

I hope someone comes up with the money soon. Maybe the Newsshopper could contribute to apologise for not removing the dubious comments sooner? (The comments which break the Site Terms due to being malicious, regardless of truth or otherwise.)

You are correct, I have no friends. I am lonely and sad. I am currently sitting in a cave by myself, sustaining myself on beetles, powering my laptop by an ingenious array of pulleys and flywheels constructed from small lizards and tree sap from the local flora. I came here to escape my family, friends, industry associates, acquaintances and the lady next door who was spying on me, in the hope of completing my novel titled "why are there so many d1ckheads called Paul that live in Erith?" I have made the dedication out to you Paul and will endeavour to send you a copy once it goes to print.
The trouble is you're confusing your own opinion with facts....... again. Are you mentally spasticated?

I'll just like to point out the hypocracy in your statement, "This is just one of your attempts to try and make yourself look big and ard init."
That seems to be your staple tactic on this website. For example, how many times do you criticise someone's spelling or grammar. Funnily enough I read a comment you wrote in the last hour where you did exactly that. (ist 1st). I can see only one reason for this; namely to try to put them down and make yourself look big.

And you didn't have a rant at them first. Saying 'Get a life! A phrase retards say to other people who they don't know anything about. It's just a dumb phrase to say because they can't think of anything else but just want your attention. The truth is the people who tell others to 'get a life' are the ones lacking the life.
You got done big time! LOL.

The first time this story appeared I said this "I sympathise with this family's plight but you have to ask why insurance companies now don't cover 'balcony incidents'. I can't recall the last time one happened in the UK but abroad Brits are doing it in great numbers and it isn't hard to figure out why. I hope the family are able to borrow the money and bring him home but for me I'm afraid there are other causes I would rather donate to.”. I am prepared to give £50 if someone WHO KNOWS, not some guess work, actually says what happened, how and what time of the day. If people expect donations then people who might donate can be expected to judge whether it was a reckless act that caused the injury. I think it is only fair if you expect money from strangers that they don't read two stories that exclude the actual detail of what happened.

Obviously rare cockneyguvner you are unable to be polite! you quote tags on people you know nothing about I find that very insulting, if however you had something intelligent to say I would truly be intrigued. obviously your vocabulary hasn't risen above the play ground slang you read in trashy magazines! In future I suggest you keep your belittling comments to your self!

Jesus Christ how many vindictive nasty people out there? Im ashamed to read those who have written such horrid comments about Charlie. Hes a good lad, who doesnt deserve such comments or doubt thrown in. He didnt jump, nor were drink or drugs involved as he was tested for them. The toxicology report came back as a total NEGATIVE. So cast that Assumption out of that lonely brain cell. If you have anything negative to say, then dont bother, as Charlie needs all the Positive energy sent... not you foolish negative rubbish awaiting a responce... how sad these Trolls are.....

Strange that his friends & family were quick to add "certain" comments, but no-one has enlightened us as to exactly what happened

I'm always handing money out and lending it to people. But I guess I'm saying that I still have compassion for this guy whether or not it was his fault. If you saw a drunk guy fall off a wall he was climbing and laying there dying, you wouldn't just leave him. You'd still call the ambulance and hope that he's ok. I guess I'm saying we all do really stupid things sometimes but some of get lucky and some don't.
