Dartford taxi fares expected to increase and double on Christmas Day

The flag rate is expected to rise by 20p. The flag rate is expected to rise by 20p.

TAXI fares in Dartford may increase by 20p next month and double on Christmas and New Year’s Day if drivers get their way.

Drivers are proposing to increase the flag rate – the fee paid when people initially hire a taxi for the first mile – from £2.20 to £2.40.

In an application to Dartford Council, drivers are also applying for double fares to be chargeable on Christmas Day and New Years Day.

The application has been put forward after just one taxi driver was available in Dartford on Christmas Day last year.

Back then, rates could only be charged at the usual night fare plus an additional £4 paid to drivers over the Christmas period.

If the application to increase the cost of all fares by 20p is given the nod by Dartford Council’s cabinet next Thursday (October 25), it will be the first increase since 2009.

Drivers say rising fuel and insurance costs and falling passenger numbers are the reasons behind their application to increase fares.

But before the extra cost is passed on to punters, the council is recommending an online and media consultation with the intention being for new fares to come in from November 19.

I remember walking past a certain cab company in Bromley a few years ago on Xmas Day. The front window of the same contained a huge sign bearing the words "Double Fare". Outside was a line of empty mini cabs, inside a line of glum drivers sitting on a bench. Thats what happens when you try to rip people off.
